Responding to a crisis - A brief guide for Officials

 


  1. Develop a positive attitude towards the crisis. This will generate confidence among those around you

  2. Above all - be honest!

  3. Ensure that you are accessible

  4. Ensure consistency in your actions and statements

  5. Demonstrate your concern for and towards those affected. Show that you are trying to put things right

  6. Remain calm and considered and avoid decision making under pressure

  7. Use plain English and avoid jargon at all costs. Make and prepare statements that can be easily understood by everyone

  8. Talk only about FACTS!

  9. Never speculate until you are SURE of your FACTS!

  10. Expect the unexpected

  11. Be prepared to cope with an extended period of high pressure

The above points were compiled after observing the major mistakes made by officialdom following a number of serious incidents.
