Is your property in the right band?
When properties in the UK were valued to decide what tax band they should be assessed under lots of mistakes were made. This could mean that you have been paying too much property tax!
So how do you find out? Visit the Valuation Office Authority’s website at www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax
This is a seriously useful little site. Basically its a record of every house in the UK and what
band they fall under.
To use: Check out your house and check out your neighbours who have similar properties..
What you are looking for is a difference in banding, if you find one its time to take action.Ring the council and ask why you are in a different band to others when you have the same property type. And when you do, remember that in the vast majority of cases these valuations were established in 1991, 17 years ago.
If you find that other properties down your street fall in different bands it could well be that your valuation is wrong. Don’t beat around the bush, ask the council for a new valuation. You could be in for a rebate all the way back to 1993.
