Course author and Tutor Duncan Murray DCHyp A.Cert.C.S. Hyp, GQHP says the following about his specific interest in the treatment of IBS with Gut Orientated Therapy.

'As someone who had IBS for 17 years I noticed, whilst studying for my Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis, a rapid and long-term improvement in the behaviour of my gut to the extent that there are only a couple of foods that now trigger an attack – my problem for liking hot curries and chillies. I therefore developed a special interest in the treatment of IBS through hypnotherapy, and was originally trained in IBS treatment by Michael Mahoney of the IBS Register as well as by the BST Foundation, before developing my own approach and course based on the research of Professor Peter Whorwell (et al) and that was not just efficient but also empowering for the client. The course also gives an understanding of the changes to the diagnosis of IBS in the Primary Care setting where colonoscopy is not the main diagnostic method. I am also on the GHR Specialist Register for IBS and Gut Related Disorders and have since founded IBSHelp.

Promoting mental well-being and good mental health have been a long-term passion for me having had a background as a manager in the voluntary sector working both in the areas of mental health and homelessness for about 10 years in London and Hampshire. Whilst working in the voluntary sector I was trained in alcohol counselling and as a facilitator for the Pacific Institute's community based cognitive behavioural programme 'STEPS' ™ (Steps to Excellence for Personal Success).

Studying hypnotherapy and becoming a fully qualified hypnotherapist completing not just the Practitioner's Diploma gaining a Distinction with Merit but also the Advanced Practitioner's Certificate in Clinical and Strategic Hypnosis; becoming GHR & National Regulatory Register registered was a natural progression.

My hypnotherapy training was undertaken with the highly respected Brief Strategic Therapy & Clinical Hypnosis Foundation in London, achieving a Distinction with Merit in my Diploma, that was externally examined by the United Kingdom Clinical and Strategic Hypnosis Examination Board and is validated by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSc).

This distance learning course, delivered in conjunction with its author and founder of IBSHelp.org.uk, is aimed at two groups, hypnotherapists and those that have been trained in guided imagery techniques. The purpose of the course is to, as accurately as possible, inform the student about the research supporting the treatment of IBS through Gut Orientated Metaphor, explain what IBS is and the diagnostic criteria now used in Primary Care, and to enable the student to be able to effectively construct sessions and manage the treatment of clients presenting with a clinical diagnosis of IBS. Formal assessment is made on the submission of a script of approximately 30 minutes duration that would be used in a Gut Orientated Metaphor session. Suggested study time is 25 hours. This course is valid for CPD as defined by the GHR. Completion of this course will also enable GHR registrants to join the GHR’s IBS Specialist Register. Successful completion of the course will qualify that therapist to be listed on IBSHelp.org.uk’s website, subject to other professional quality assurance criteria as detailed on that website and the payment of the minimal annual subscription cost.
